       'We know that the family first arrived in America between 1760 and 1776. Son Thomas was born in Scotland but fought in the Revolutionary War. During the period between 1755 and 1771, it is estimated that about 20,000 Scots immigrated to America due to serious land reforms taking place in Scotland. Mr. Richard Krouskop, a descendant of Caleb Orrahud, reported to Mrs. Riordan that an elderly distant relative had found an old scrap of paper stuffed in an old pitcher. The paper indicated that Alexander, Joshua and Thomas came to America from Scotland and had the dates 1745 and 1763. Based on Thomas' birth year, I would have to guess that the 1763 might indicate when the family arrived in America.

       'The family eventually settled in what then was Hampshire County, VA. The county was part of VA that became WV. The area was located in a part of Hampshire County that later became Hardy County. It is not known if this was the first area where they settled. Thomas enlisted in the Revolutionary Army in Chester County, PA. The earliest record in Hampshire County is 1782...

       'Alexander Orrahood is found in the 1782 census of Hampshire County, VA. This is the earliest census of this area. Alexander is listed as the head of household of 10 whites. In the 1784 census he is listed as head of household of 9 whites with one building. Alexander Orrahood was listed on the Personal Property Tax Roll for Hardy County in 1787. A land grant was issued to Alexander Arrowhood on May 15, 1788 for 389 acres for a compensation of two pounds sterling. Two days later a grant was issued to William Norman. William's land description includes 'Arrowhood's line' and 'Arrowhood's corner,' showing that these two were neighbors. It is believed that these two families had been neighbors for quite some time and these grants were simply confirmation of ownership of lands that these two families had lived on during pre-Revolution times. In this area there is a stream named Norman's Run and it was common practice to name these streams after the first family to settle on them. The Orrahud land was located on a ridge between Lunice Creek between Petersburg and Maysville, VA (WV). The land was located in Hampshire County, VA that became part of WV and then part of Hardy County WV. On November 9, 1798, Alexander transferred 200 acres to his son Joshua. On August 2, 1800 he transferred 100 acres to his son Thomas. On August 8, 1800 the 200 acres transferred to Joshua were transferred back to Alexander. On December 3, 1800 Alexander transferred 100 acres back to Joshua.

       'Alexander married Ethalen before moving to America. If the earlier theory is correct, her maiden name might have been Hud. Alexander and Ethalen died after 1800 but before 1806.. They had seven children...'

And when Grant County was formed from part of Hardy, the Orahood property became part of the new Grant County, West Virginia. "

       "Thomas Orchard (Orrahud) was born in Scotland in 1760. He immigrated to America with his parents as a very small child. In the spring of 1776, Thomas enlisted in the Company of John Pugh in Chester, PA. He served in the 13th Pennsylvania State Regiment of Colonel Walter. Thomas fought in the battles of Germantown, Monmouth, Stony Point, and White Plains. From July 6, 1777 to October 27, 1777, Thomas served at Brandewine. He was discharged in 1781. When he returned home to Hampshire County, Thomas married Sarah (Sally) Norman, who was possible the widow of John Norman who was the son of Alexander Orrahud's neighbor William Norman. Thomas and Sarah were married on March 29, 1785. Thomas is listed on the Personal Property Tax Roll for Hardy County in 1787. On February 6, William Norman transferred 100 acres to Thomas... In 1804 Thomas sold 100 acres of land to George Seymour. In 1806 Thomas sold his inheritance from his father and his final 100 acres to Joseph Prather. About 1816, Thomas and his family joined the first movement of people westward over the Alleghany Mountains. They settled in Concord Township, Ross county, OH. On July 13, 1818, Thomas filed an application for a pension due to his military service. On his application, he stated that he had no income, one horse, four sheep, no trade and that he was too frail and infirm to work. He also stated that his property was valued at $30 and he had a wife, five grown children and two children still at home, ages eleven and seven. He was allowed a pension. In a lawsuit filed later by a daughter on behalf of the heirs of Sarah Orahood, nine children were listed. Thomas Arrowhood is listed in the 1820 census of Concord Twp., Ross Co., OH.

       "Caleb Orrahud was most likely born in Hampshire County before 1776. Sometime before 1790 he married Phoebe Coberly (Cubberly). Based on her death information, Phoebe was born in 1776 which means she was married at the age of 14. There are no records of Caleb owning land until 1806 when he purchased 60 acres from Jonathan Watson. He also signed the deed on November 7, 1806 with his siblings when they sold their inheritance to Joshua. Caleb sold his 60 acres to Henson Veatch prior to 1818 when he and Phoebe and their daughter and son-in-law moved to Ross County, OH. Sometime between 1820 and 1825, they all moved to Liberty Township, Union County, OH. After Phoebe died in 1839, Caleb and his daughter's family moved to Coles County, IL where his daughter and her husband died. Caleb Arrowhood is listed in the 1840 census of Coles Co., IL. Phoebe died in 1839 at the age of 63 in Liberty Township, Union County, OH. Caleb and Phoebe Orrahud had fourteen children..."

       "The 1850 Ross Co., OH census lists Edward Young, 54 and his wife Ethali, 54, b. abt. 1796 VA living with Hosea [Young], 17, laborer; Absalom Bryant, 34, grocer; Sarah Orahood, 84, b. VA [Ethali's mother]; Jackson Orahood, 18; Rosanna McCartney 24, b. OH... There is an obelisk in the Christy-Rowe-Young Cemetery near Frankfort, [Ross Co.] OH, with Edward Young's name and the name Ethelinda. Ethelinda is not buried there. Another small stone was prepared for "Ethali." The name is abbreviated, as Ethelinda was too long for the narrow stone. Perhaps that is how the name got shortened. [Ethali/Ethalinda is an old Anglo-Saxon name from before 1066--as in Ethalred/Aethealread, Ethalstan/Aethealstane.]

       "Sarah, 84, is the widow of Thomas Sr. and is buried in the Christy-Rowe-Young Cemetery with Thomas Sr. She is Ethali's mother..."

        "One of Thomas, Jr.'s children left behind in OH may have been Andrew Jackson Arahood who was raised by his Aunt Ethali Orahood [Byant] Young (wife of Edward Young) Thomas, Jr.'s sister, and Sarah, Thomas, Jr.'s mother..."

        "A lawsuit in the Ross County, OH Common Pleas Court was over land that was partially owned by Elizabeth Bryant and Sarah Orahood. The suit was brought by Edward Young and his wife Ethelinda. Sarah died intestate in 1854 and Elizabeth died intestate in 1859. They each owned real estate in Frankfort, OH (lot #57). Edward and Ethali are listed in the census of Ross Co., OH in 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860. Edward died February 1, 1870... Edward and Ethali are buried at the Christie-Rowe-Young Cemetery in Ross county with her parents.
